Above the Brim

Rivertown rants, raves and reviews from a man of many hats

Did someone say “Italian?”

–In honor of my upcoming trip to Italy, I have to give props to my favorite Italian place in town.  It goes without saying that the cuisine in Italy is going to blow me away…but Petaluma’s Sugo Trattoria has set the bar pretty high.– As you walk the streets of Ptown this summer, attending the farmers market, admiring the boats in the turning basin, or checking out the various art exhibits, you will need to eat.  Whether for lunch or… Read More »

What Does Petaluma Taste Like?

The 5th Annual Taste of Petaluma is slated for Saturday, September 25th but DO NOT wait to buy your tickets since there will only be a limited number issued this year.  Get the special “locals” price before tickets increase for the out of towners!!!  (The last day of the “early bird” special is August 2nd.) When I returned to Petaluma after 15 years of living in other parts of the Bay Area, the first thing I wanted to do was eat. … Read More »

A Museum That Is Big On Power

So far I have found two little know private museums in the Petaluma area.  Before you jump to any blurry Monet conclusions, I warn you that they are not what most would expect from a museum, but in my book they are just as valuable for their art, history, and culture.  This weekend’s “Power Up” at the Penngrove Museum of Power and Implement promises much more than just tractors and trains.  Rarely open to the public, this Saturday’s aptly named “Power Up”… Read More »

Inaugural Strange Pie Challenge

Attending Penngrove’s “Biggest Little Parade” on July 4th built up an appetite that only the Penngrove Picnic could fill, and so we spent the middle of the day stuffing ourselves with pit beef, BBQ chicken and 4H Zerts (at $1 a piece, you can’t get just one dessert.)   If we had planned better we would have worn our “eatin’ britches” but with the loosening of belts we rolled over to Humble Pie to see what all the fuss was about… Read More »

Parades, Picnics, Pies, and Fireworks

The Fourth of July again delivered better than promised.  A little hot for some, I think the weather was perfect.  It was warm early enough that short pants were in order, peaking midday with perfect picnicking weather, as long as you could find a good shade tree.  The evening brought its normal cooling but without the fog, which sometimes obscure the fireworks. We began our day with a quick breakfast at Hallie’s, followed by the short ride out to Penngrove… Read More »

A Fourth of July Tradition

I grew up in Penngrove.  This isn’t an admission, it’s a proclamation.  I just returned from the Penngrove Firemen’s Breakfast, and am feeling especially nostalgic of Penngrove and am excited to attend tomorrow’s Fourth of July Parade.  I don’t know if it is dubbed the “Biggest Little Parade” because it actually is, or if it just appears that way because half a dozen people can make downtown Penngrove look busy.  As a kid, I couldn’t say that Penngrove was the… Read More »
